Asphalt was known at least as early as 3800 B.C. when the ancient Mesopotamians used it in making mortar and bricks and in shipbuilding. Natural seepage was the source of Mesopotamian asphalt. Similar sources were mined in the West until asphalt began to be produced in the late 1800's.
WHAT IS ASPHALT?
Asphalt pavement is made up of a precise combination of crushed rock, aggregate and binder. The binder is petroleum asphalt which is the residue of crude oil after the lighter cuts such as gasoline and diesel oil have been removed. The components of asphalt paving are mixed together at temperatures of 300 - 350 F. for ease of handling, and placed on a prepared base with mechanical spreaders of varying widths. Asphalt is then compacted with rollers to reduce the air voids and eliminate deformities. Asphalt is known as the flexible pavement, for unlike concrete, asphalt pavement will conform to gentle deflections in the sub-base.
