St. John Ambulance

In 1883 in Quebec City, the first Canadian branch of St. John Ambulance to teach first aid courses was established. Shortly thereafter courses were being offered in Kingston, Ontario. In the next 10 years, St. John Ambulance grew to be a national organization and in 1892 it had 12 branches teaching first aid. In those early years, alongside the continued growth in first aid training, St. John Ambulance also began a proud tradition of volunteer work in our communities. Soon the volunteers of St. John became a common and welcome sign in times of emergency in communities across the country.
C’est en 1883, à Québec, que la première division canadienne d’Ambulance Saint-Jean qui donnait des cours de premiers soins a été créée. Peu de temps après, des cours ont été offerts à Kingston, en Ontario. Au cours des dix années suivantes, Ambulance Saint-Jean a grandi, devenant un véritable organisme national et, en 1892, elle comptait douze divisions d’enseignement des premiers soins, d’un océan à l’autre. Pendant ses premières années d’existence, en plus de la croissance continue des activités de formation en premiers soins, Ambulance Saint-Jean a commencé à développer une fière tradition d’activité bénévole dans nos collectivités. Rapidement, les bénévoles d’Ambulance Saint-Jean se sont fait connaître et apprécier dans les situations d’urgence au sein des collectivités de partout au pays.
