Description
Everyone has their own idea of what casual dining means. If yours includes great tasting food, a game of pool, and a place where the owner knows your name, then Daytona’s Restaurant and Sports bar is your casual home away from home.
John Collins, owner of Daytona’s Restaurant and Sports Bar, has been a permanent fixture in the restaurant industry in Thunder Bay for over thirty years. He learned a love of serving food from his father, who was a chef.
Spending over twenty years in Banquet Management for the Airlane Hotel allowed him the opportunity to meet many famous clients. He once cooked for Johnny Cash and he bartended for Pierre Trudeau. Famous, or like one of the family, John loves catering to everyone. Speaking of catering, he does that too. In 1996, Collins began a catering business and offers his services (now through the restaurant) from small parties to larger events like weddings.
John started Daytona’s last year and prides himself on the three things that have made him successful: “We serve good quality food in large portion sizes at a reasonable price,” he said.
At Daytona’s, they offer a full breakfast for just $5.99 and coffee with as many refills as you can manage. They also serve French toast, pancakes and omelettes. Lunch is the traditional fare of soups, salads and hot sandwiches - the hamburger nip is a particular favourite, and they will be adding a prime rib special on weekends to the dinner menu.
In the fall, he plans to introduce lunch buffets and offer dinner parties with live entertainment.
Open early, and open late ‘til 2 a.m., Daytona’s is a great place to watch the game, hang out after the game, play some pool, sing along to All-Star Karaoke or just enjoy some good food or drink.
For a generous helping of casual dining, visit Daytona’s Restaurant and Sports Bar on the corner of Cobalt Crescent and Alloy Drive.
