Description
For those that don't know what a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) is, let me explain: We collect financial information (eg. assets, liabilities, pensions, insurance policies, etc) from clients going through divorce (common law included) and put this information into our software and analyze the results which we share with the clients and their lawyers.
Our role is to assist the client and his/her lawyer to understand how the financial decisions he/she makes today will impact the clients financial future and to help make a fair settlement in splitting the assets. We help our clients understand:
- what they owe and own
- the difference between personal and marital property
- how best to divide property, investments, pensions and other assets
- what can happen to your retirement nest egg or your business when you divorce
- what to do about spousal and child support
- whether you can afford to keep the matrimonial home, and if not, what he/she can afford
- how divorce affects taxes
Many lawyers struggle with the intricate financial details, as they are experts in law, not finance. This is why lawyers have seen virtue of bringing a financial expert into the divorce process at the very start.
A CDFA can offer a peace of mind that your settlement is financially feasible, an objective viewpoint in an emotional situation, and expert advice about your financial needs. Your marriage may be over, but the rest of your life is still ahead. Working with a CDFA can increase your chances of reaching a settlement that fully addresses your long term financial needs, securing your financial future and can help you gain financial stability in your new life as a single person or single parent.
