Description
At an early age, Doreen Gordon realized she had a God given gift for drawing. Doreen's desire was drawing in realism. Although nature has always inspired her renderings, Doreen developed the talent of being able to accurately draw portraits of people and animals.
Growing up in the jewellery industry she used her talents in designing and creating jewellery. She wanted to explore her art with hand engraving in different metals such as gold, silver, and copper. It didn't seem to develop into much until her sister gave her a hand engraver for Christmas and some stones.
Doreen fell in love with using stone as her drawing tablet. Stone was so unique in its different textures and colours. She created engravings that were greatly inspired by nature and her Christian faith. She was excited for she developed a product line of her own. She has attended many juried art/gift wholesale and retail shows, such as "One of a Kind" and "By Hand". Her work has sold across Canada and the US in several stores and magazines. Due to the demand of hand engraving so many pieces, Doreen developed carpel-tunnel in her wrist. She could no longer hand engrave, and took a break for quite some time to rest.
During this time, she was determined to continue somehow with her creations of art on stone. Doreen's drawings are delicate in fine detail, making it difficult to find a new process.
Through research, trial and eorr, she found a way of sand engraving. Sand engraving is a well known form of art. However it is the new complex process where she transfers her drawings into templates, which makes it stand out from other processes.
Doreen can now again welcome any size order, large or small. These stone pieces of artwork can be as diverse as from your individual engraved house numbers to custom engrave stone fireplace. Or large orders from several pieces of custom engraved stone tiles for your flooring to the multiple pieces for corporate gifts.
She still engraves by hand one of a kind individual pieces of her drawings and portraits.
She continues to take commissions of portraits of people, pets, homes, autos, etc. Her nature drawings of animals, flowers, and scenes are rendered in sepia artist pencils. In the last year, she has also enjoyed working on some paintings in watercolour. As well, just before Christmas of 2010, she has laminated her drawings and paintings on stone by means of decoupage.
