At Runs With Rover, we can relate to the fact that your dog is a loved member of your family. If you didn’t love your dog, you surely wouldn’t hire us to get them out of the house for some exercise and socialization. We also recognize that although anatomically similar, our psychology is quite different.
Humans are emotional beings, and we use a combination of communication methods automatically without even noticing. Canines live in the moment (don’t hold grudges) and communicate almost entirely with body language. Instinctively, dogs are pack animals, and they establish a hierarchy almost instantly upon meeting. There is a leader and followers. Our goal is to be confident, calm, and assertive (not aggressive!) to establish dominance as the pack leader right from the start. This is done via subtle body language and the appropriate level of intensity (projecting energy). Once it’s been established that the human is a confident pack leader, the dogs will naturally follow, and generally be calm – peacefully following the pack. This is the goal in all our interactions with dogs – from the first meeting (consultation) to the actual walks, our goal is to maintain full control of the pack using mostly body language, and (very few) vocal corrections. The result is the ability to walk a pack of dogs – size or breed is a non issue – I often walk a pack with dogs that range from 2 to 200 pounds! This leads to a productive walk where the dogs will get to do what comes naturally for them – walk/run/sniff. Fish swim, birds fly, and dogs walk. It’s natural for them. Going for walks, especially in a pack setting is the best way for a dog to release their energy in a way that doesn’t include destroying your new furniture. They get a bathroom break, time to socialize, and an opportunity to be a dog! We strive to promote a lifestyle that leads to happy, healthy dogs. Since dogs are man’s best friend, we figure this will make you pretty happy as well.
