Heat from inside your house escapes into the attic creating the snow on the roof to melt, the melted snow will run down the roof to the overhang and freeze. when the water freezes at the overhang it creates a dam and stops the water from flowing, when this happens the water will accumulate and create a pond. as the water ponds up to 2 inches it will run behind the shingles getting into your home. Another way for ice dams to happen is for the weather to change from low temperatures to above temperature in a very short period of time, this also creates ice dams for water to pond behind. If you don't clear your roof off in the winter when the snow builds up damages can occur as well. If no action is taken, it may form huge ice chunks and several soft / hard layers of snow on the roof. The ice and hard layers of snow add substantial weight to your roof and framing. The additional weight can cause pressure cracks in your drywall, you may hear loud bang in the roof. This means the framing has moved out of place slightly.
